Nigerian ‘pirate’ boss to be extradited to the Netherlands
A 27-year-old suspected Nigerian “pirate’ syndicate boss, Itoruboemi Benson Lobia, is set to be extradited to the Netherlands for prosecution.
According to Timeslive, there was a ruling by South Africa’s Kempton Park Magistrate’s Court on Friday.
In November 2018, South Africa’s Interpol branc arrested Lobia at the OR Tambo International Airport, fleeing to Mauritius following his most recent attack.
The Dutch cargo ship FWN Rapide crew was kidnapped in April 2018 while travelling between Nigeria and Ghana, held hostage for three weeks before being released after an intensive negotiation process.
The Dutch government insisted Lobia was the pirate group leader, and suspects he may have been responsible for other similar attacks and running a syndicate with international connections.
Lobia said the Nigerian army hired him as a ships security officer, in charge of protecting the Nigerian waterways.
